物書きのバイブルThe Elements of Styleによれば、
Do not spell out dates or other serial numbers. Write them in figures or in Roman notation, as appropriate.

Exception: When they occur in dialogue, most dates and numbers are best spelled out.
- "I arrived home on August ninth."
- "In the year 1990, I turned twenty-one."
- "Read Chapter Twelve."
The Chicago Manual of Styleによれば、スペルアウトするのは次の場合（Alertboxから転載。手元にある第14版では8.3あたり）
- "one (1) からninety-nine (99) までの整数"
- 後に"hundred (百)、thousand (千)、hundred thousand (十万)、million (百万)など"の桁数表記が続く場合
- 概数
- とても大きな数字（millions (〜百万)、billions (〜十億) など）
- 文頭に数字が来る場合
原書には次のような注もあった
（Newspaper styleや学術誌等は）decress that only the numbers from one through nine and such multiples as one hundred or nine thousand are to be spelled out.
ちなみに、Chicago ManualとElements of Styleは、まとめて買うとお得。Elements of Styleを持っている人は多いかもしれないけど、そういう人でさえも。でも、ChicagoはCD-ROM版が欲しいかも
The Elements of Styleを推薦参考書に指定したKnuthの講義（クヌース先生のドキュメント纂法）で提示されているルール(p. 5)
形容詞として用いる小さな数は数字でなくことばで書くこと。ただし数自体を表す場合には数字を用いなければならない。
悪い例：The method requires 2 passes.
よい例：Method 2 is illustrated in Fig. 1; it requires 17 passes. The count was increased by 2. The leftmost 2 in the sequence was changed to a 1.
Jakob Nielsenによれば、ウェブは別物（オンラインの読者には算用数字で数を示そう）
- 数値は、スペル (twenty-three) ではなくアラビア数字 (23) で表記すること。
- 数値が文や箇条書きの先頭に来る場合でも、アラビア数字を使うこと。
- 大きな数値も、十億まではアラビア数字を使うこと。
- 2,000,000と書いた方が、two million (二百万) と書くよりも好ましい。
- Two trillion (二兆) の方が、2,000,000,000,000よりも好ましい。ゼロがこれだけ並んでしまうと読み取るのが難しくなるからだ。
- 落としどころとして、有効数字をアラビア数字で示し、桁数をスペル表記することもできる。twenty-four billionや24,000,000,000ではなく、24 billion (240億) という具合。
- 事実の記述ではない場合の数値はスペル表記とすること。
